It is a shame that the lives of the poor are so often ignored. The constant daily struggle for survival in this difficult life is something that they have to deal with every day, and not just in their own homes, but on buses, trains or when they are out shopping. There is so much they have to go through on a daily basis just to live their day-to-day life. But some of them have more to cope with than just that. The life Martin Martin leads is one that many people would find difficult to comprehend, although you would have to be more intelligent than most people in order to understand what he goes through. He lives alone in a flat with no windows on the ground floor. It has only one entrance and one exit, with no light or ventilation, no bathroom or even a way of removing faeces from the toilet. Martin's problem is that he has become incontinent because of an injury he suffered while working on a roof, and at present is unable to control his bowel movements. Despite this he manages his life as well as he can. He has learned to control his bladder by urinating when he feels the need, but the bowel controls are beyond his control. The social services have tried to help him in several ways, but Martin's problem is complicated because of the injury he sustained in the workplace. The failure to get any help has caused him to fall into depression and it is only when events begin to spiral out of control that any help comes his way. Martin lives in Liverpool, where he was born and brought up, but has lived alone for many years after both his parents died. He was laid off work for five years. It was during this time that he suffered the injury which made him incontinent. It is because of this that he has trouble functioning in society. He gets into arguments with people who seem to have no understanding of his situation, or would just be too busy to take notice or care. People are usually too busy with their own lives to realise what Martin has been through, so when they do see him they are often ready to treat him with contempt if he gets in their way. The fact that Martin doesn't have any social skills means he can't get a job either. Those who are willing to employ him give it up after a short time because they can see what is happening, and it becomes an impossible task for them to deal with the incontinent issue in the office or living quarters. The problems Martin has had to face over the years have made him very wary of getting involved with other people. He doesn't want to contact the social services because he feels that they would be too busy dealing with other cases to give him a helping hand. The mere fact that he has been able to survive this long is a testament to his incredible will power and determination, but when Martin's flat is burgled and all his possessions are taken, including his television, he begins his downward spiral into depression. That is when things start going from bad to worse for him. He can't get on with life without a television and answers an advertisement in a local newspaper looking for a TV repair man.
